My new Albopita's arrived last night, both retracted, gave one a bath and he is absolutely fine now, the other however I am very worried about! When I first picked him up he felt very light and I turned the shell over to have a look at him, and he was so deeply retracted I thought I'd been sent an empty shell!!! He had retracted 2/3rds into his shell! It was so bad I had trouble seeing him! I gave him a shower but that didn't work, I then began filling the shell with water for 10 seconds, I kept trying it for about 30 minutes before he finally stuck his head out, not his whole foot, just his head, I tried putting a couple of drops on his neck to rehydrate him, and I also tried soft cucumber to get him to eat, which he didn't I'm going to try some soaked fish flakes soon. I don't want him to die, I refuse to let him die! I don't care what I have to do! I won't let him die!!!

I really want all 4 types, I'll probably keep them all together and just see what I get, but if I want a certain type then I'll seperate a couple and wait until they produce what I'm after! but I think the 'lucky dip' approach sounds rather exciting I'll only keep 1 or 2 eggs out of every clutch and hopefully I'll get what I'm after eventually haha! But I do think it's something I've got to put a bit more thought into!! Thanks for all your help!

Wow thanks for the reply! So by keeping all 4 types together there is a possibility of their offspring being all 4 types? Hope so!

Another question, if you'd be so kind to answer... I've got 4 Fulica snails: 1 normal 1 White Jade 1 Rodatzi 1 Jadatzi They are all living together, so should they produce all 4 variants?? Thanks

I was on a reptile forum and from what you and they've said I've got to move my tank away from the wall as it is sapping the heat, and that I really should get it insulated... And doing that should (hopefully) fix my problem! thanks for the help!!!

I'm currently using a 28 watt 23x11 inch habistat heat mat on my tank, but it just doesn't seem to be heating up enough, I was hoping for temps of 25-30c but only getting about 20-22c, I've just ordered some polystyrene to insulate it, but wondered if maybe buying a thermostat would help raise temp too? I didn't need one with my old mat, but it was only a 6-4 inch 4 watt mat, but it still seemed to heat up better than this new one?

At the moment I have all my snails in a 17 gallon tank, but now they've grown up a bit I'm planning a much better tank for them. I've found a 110 litre storage tub, sadly it's not clear, but its impossible to find a clear one in that size, and I'm sure my snails won't mind too much I'm also planning on getting a 20watt 17" - 11" heat mat for it. The size of the tub will give me room to play around with so I'm going to try planting some spider and ivy plants from my own mother plants. Then I think I'm going to fill the tank with soil and then plant the plants and maybe add some worms to eat up the snail poop and stuff to massively cut down on clean-outs, add a rock and maybe a log and get them a new food dish, and maybe fill a ice-cream tub with moss and bury it in the tank for them. What do you all think? Is that ok, or is there anything I should do differently?? I did see someones tank that used some sort of material on the bottom instead of soil and added a couple of tubs: one filled with soil and the other moss, and they said it was much easier that way to clean them out and stuff as she could just pick up the dirt from the floor, but couldn't work out what it was she actually used on the base..? Anyway, any advice/suggestions would be very helpful! thanks
