unless the snail is ill and weak, I always wake my snails up, I then increase the temps in the tank to make sure it doesnt happen again

Just as I solve one issue another arises! I have 2 baby retics, which are in a tank of their own until they are big enough to join my larger retics, and normally they are fine and active and quite frankly, seemed to be doing extremly well. However, when I checked on them both this morning one of them had lost both its eyes! I think maybe the other retic has eaten them off? They were fine yesterday, I just dont understand why this has happened? I have watched him for a couple of hours and an sure they have gone as in those hours his eye stalks have not grown as they usually would, there are just these black stubs on his head where his eyes should be What should I do? Can he live without eyes? Or should I put him to sleep? Please help... I'm really worried about him

Ever since I first saw albino Achatina Achatina I knew I had to have some! But because my normal tigers were inactive I was against getting albinos while my set-up was obviously wrong. But ever since I increased the heat and gave them a lot more moss for better humidity, my tigers have been absolutely thriving! ;D So now I know what they like... I did it! I bought myself 2 albino tigers and 2 sliver bodied suturalis margies!! ;D I am soooo happy and excited, and I really cannot wait for them to arrive!!! ;D But I was just wondering about what to do in terms of when they get here, as I've never had snails from another country before, so I'm unsure if theres anything I should do when they arrive, like should I give them a quick shower to revive them after their trip? Give them some really good food? Or should I just put them in their tanks and leave them too it when they arrive? Any advice would be appriciated as I just to make sure I do the best thing for them! Thanks!

I had a snail that was in a bad way when he arrived and I only had him 2 weeks before he passed away. For your guy though, was just probably age or some kind of genetic fault, if your others are fine then it was nothing you've done or nothing you could have prevented from happening.. just be glad the others seem ok and dont feel too bad about it (though I know it's easier said than done!), but just remember that you cared for him for the last few weeks of his life, I'm sure he was very happy and very grateful to you for taking care of him!

sorry for your loss it was probably age if your others are fine, but who knows, sometimes snails seem to die for seemingly no reason at all, all part of being a snail owner I believe...

I know how hard it is to lose a snail one of my alpobicta pair suffered deep retraction ever since I got him, I tried for days and days to save him but he just wasted away ='( I only had him a couple of weeks, but he was loved and my other albopicta is in with my other snails, but I sometimes get the feeling he misses his own kind... It was such a sad time and I always get upset when I see pictures of him! but he's at rest now and waiting at the Rainbow Bridge with the other snails, and I'm sure they're having a blast up there doing all things snail haha! I'm very sorry to hear about your snail and hope we somehow made you feel a little better! xx

its not paint, its a non-toxic nail paint, which is a tiny dab on the tip of the apex and they are fine with it, think they would've showed signs of being unwell by now as some have been marked for a year now and they are very healthy and happy. plenty of snails are painted, its a good way of keeping track of them all when you have a lot, after all, as long as its not toxic there's no problem. People do the same with many other shelled animals, they just make sure that what they're using isnt harmful first

I have 2 of all my types of GALS, so for instance my fulica, the tip of one I will paint blue, and the other will be painted pink, that way I can always be sure of which is which, and can then say that the blue one is a 'he' and the pink one a 'she'.

Mine only move about when I've dug them up... The temps are like 27C so pretty good and the humidity is fine and the soil is nice and moist so dont understand what is wrong them If I leave them and dont dig them up they just stay there, there'll be no new trails, food goes untouched, and they seal up, but thats an improvement for mine as before they were sealing themselves everynight, but now they dont as as long as I dig them up regularly so things have got better, not solved, but better... I'm glad that your tigers stopped making the slime cover too as that was also my biggest concern! I'm just going to keep trying stuff until something works and stops me having to dig them up anymore!

Worms?

I keep Tiger worms in with my snails, they can withstand the higher heat and are the best composting worms. They have been great at cleaning the tanks, I have had them in my tanks for over a year and have not had to change the substrate since! The only things I have had problems with is the worms getting stuck to the bottom of my snails foot and being taken up to the top of the tank where they have wiggled out from every now and again, and also I have had worms wriggle deep inside my snails shells. Though luckily they seemed to find their way out again! I would still recommend using them, they have kept the tanks very clean and have had no serious issues with them, so overall I think using them is really worth it!

Even for me, here in England, the first question every single one of my family asked when I first got my snails was: 'You planning on eating them then?', and various friends would make jokes that they are lovely with salt or 'at least you'll never have to worry about dinners anymore, you've always got the snails if you get desperate!'. I know they are joking, well, most of them were joking anyway... lol but it kinda hurts my feelings too. I love my snails the same way I love my guinea pigs, my dog, and all my other pets that I've had. Someone would be offended if I went up to them and said 'right, lets put your dog on the spit-roast and have a feast!', but they wouldnt think I'd be offended if they said the same thing about my snails lol

Thanks =D they all came from somewhere in Manchester, they probably can be found near me but I'm too scared to search in case I run into a spider lol
But no, they need a height of about 4 feet I believe! Could just release them onto the celing or something lol
I love the Cepaea, I want MORE MORE MORE!!!! haha XD

I'm still digging mine up, just to make sure, putting them on the fresh food just to put my mind at rest.. I think I still need to find a warmer place to keep the tank as latebloomer said, but because it's a big tub I will have to rearrange my whole house just to make a new place for it lol, but think it will need to be done, especially near the end of the year..
my tigers were always making that thin layer too, I had to bath them every morning, but been able to stop that now luckily. I tried not digging them up the other day, I made sure I knew where they were, but didnt unearth them, left them there and the next day they hadnt move from that spot which was annoying, but not worrying as they hadnt made the layer or anything. I think they're are better now I've put the other heat mat on, but I do think I'll have to dig them up every couple of days just to make sure lol

well, ever since I recieved my new tigers, I have not seen their faces! no matter how hard I tried to encourage them out of their shells they were as stubborn as muck! But I dont know if the higher heat made them more receptive or what, but they actually came out today!! I've seen my tigers for the first time! lol It did worry me a bit though as my old tigers were very bulky, whereas these tigers look shrivled and too small for their shell, it looked like a real struggle for them to pull the shells along.. they were slightly retracted when they arrived, but although I couldnt get them to come out of their shell, I did always dig the up, give them a wash and put them on the fresh food in the morning, a few hours later I would check on them and they'd be burried again so thought they were just shy or something (if snails even be shy lol), but they do look very thin in comparison to their shell size... I am worried about them, as my albopicta looked like that days before he died... But I am encouraged by the fact I finally saw them today! I just really hope they pick up! if anyone else has got any advice on trying to thicken them up I'd be very grateful as they are so shrivled and weak at the mo! But am glad to say the higher heat has seemed to have been helped!

I have no idea what happened to the worms in the shells... it was weird that after a year of nothing (as far as I know) like this happening, and then all of a sudden 2 snails at the exact same time get worms wriggle inside their shells..
The rodatzi seemed absolutely fine, he didnt seem to care that the worm was in there at all, the last I saw of the worm was it crawl right up DEEP inside the shell near the tip, but the jade really didnt like the worm in there and started making loads of slim and trying to retract but the worm being in there stopped it a bit, I washed the jade and put her back, she was sort of acting normally, there wasn't anything esle I could do so I left them for a couple of hours and then checked on them, and the worms couldnt be seen at all, I dont know if they died deep inside the shells, or whether they eventually managed to find their way out again, but both the rodatzi and the jade are fine now... its just so strange...
