I'd avoid using sand as a substrate, unless you keep one of those lesser kept desert species. what's wrong in the sand? First of all sand dosent really retain humidity that well and snails need a lot of humidity. Second snails get useful bacteria from things like soil they use the bacteria for digestion and with sand it won't have the useful bacteria. lastly snails like to burrow into soil and other substrates and sand isn't really a good substrate cause while the snail burrows the sand would stick to it and go inside the shell and so on and so forth possibly making the snail sick. I hope this answers your question:) Diego Edit: this is only applicable to land snails like achatina fulica if your asking about aquatic snails like an apple snail then I'm not sure if its bad for the snail since he lives underwater.

Welcome to the forum as well. By the looks of it you're actually doing a good job because their shells look beautiful and they seem healthy. my giant african snail (achatina fulica) has a bit of bad shell growth on the middle of his shell because I didn't know that snails needed protein to make strong shells so i have to live with a bit of rough shell on my snail hahahaha.

Thanks for the info about the ventilation in the tank:) also all the snails in the tank mostly stay on the lid I think its because of the moss. My last habitat for them had no moss just soil and some wood and my GALS would always bury himself now he stays on the lid with the other snails who love to climb. They are also wild caught and where i got them theres no sphagnum moss mostly plants wood and soil so I'm guessing they aren't used to the feeling of the moss on their feet it like annoys them. What should i do or is it ok for him to stay on the lid?

Also i keep one achatina fulica and three garden snails (white shells) in the container just to let you guys know Front View: Arial view of container:

snails are mostly solitary animals and sometimes get territorial when together have you seen them rasping at each other lately? Where did you hear that snails are territorial, I'd like to see the source? Wild caught ones will sometimes fight over resources, hierarchy and partners (I have seen some furious ones with my own eyes, full blown eye stalk fencing!), and some grumpy individuals just seem to get bored of everyone, but generally it seems that if you find one snail outside, you will find a few more nearby. They like to follow each others' trails and sleep in piles. So I wouldn't call them solitary myself but if there's evidence to the contrary, I want to see it! sorry for the wrong information i just see my snails try to stay separate from each other sometimes like one snail has this area and another has this so i thought they were territorial

So i have a achatina fulica and i recently made a new habitat for him the next day i found him buried under the soil i gave him. he does not have eggs cause he's the only snail in the habitat any idea on whats going on? one of my idea is that since its a new habitat it isn't as moist as his old one so he took shelter in the moist soil but i'm not sure if im' correct ill leave him underground for now cause theres also a possibility of self fertilisation so thats another idea. please help im new to snail care hahaha

since your still staying in Korea for 3 years by the time you need to move the snails would probably be mature already so they would be easier to mail and I don't really want snails to be put in the mail cause you never know what could happen to them but if you really need to just package them well I'm sure theres a thread here about packaging snails

yeah if the snail is wild caught basic instinct tells him that if theres food eat it right away because they don't know when they can eat again in the wild to he just stockpiled on food which made him fat and look bloated after some time he'll realise that the food wont go away and he wont need to eat as much

thats also happening to my cepaea Hortensis its been there from the moment i caught him until now (it slowly receded over time i don't know how it happened) and it didn't really concern me all that much cause he's always active and eating well so i guess your snail is fine for me

maybe because of the storage space the website can handle and the very old posts are deleted automatically or how much people are posting so quickly and the old posts are drowned by the new ones
hope this helps you:)
