I would try to find a plastic container you can keep them in and take them home for weekends.
At some dollar stores you can find small critter keepers.
They really should be given a misting each day. I give mine a light mist morning and evening, even though the substrate is moist. What are you feeding them? Check on line on how to make a snail terrarium so you can give them a safe and proper home.

Photos would really help. You mentioned they were classroom pets, are they left alone all weekend? Why are they staying in a cardboard box?

Hi feelahthetigress , Did you throw out the lid of your tank your speaking of? Is it possible for you to show a photo of your tank and lid (if you still have the lid)? If your tank is getting to much water in it, put in a few layers of drainage gravel on the very bottom of your tank, and some window screen over the drainage gravel, then the substrate over the window screen and then whatever else you place in your tank. then when the water level has risen in your drainage gravel pull up a corner of the screen covering the drainage gravel and tip your tank on the side and using a turkey baster suck out the excess water. If you still have the plastic lid, ( if it is like a few of my tanks), I lay a piece of window screen over the tank first then put the lid on, snailies or sluggies can't get out. Then you can take the lid off and then simply wash the piece of screen (it is easy). Then put the screen back on then put the lid back on. Hope to see a picture of your tank. vallery

Ha! Ha! Those are all so great. You know when your snail obsessed when you can't wait for it to rain., and you actually like going out in the rain snailing. Or when you take more photographs of your snails then your family, and even hang them on your wall with your family photos. You start journaling about your snails instead of your life. You talk baby talk to them even though they can't hear you, unfortunately your family can. vallery

Hi Cashell , The shells you found are great. I still plan to go to that ravine by my place this coming week in T.O. to look for the snails, and fossil hunt. Did you happen to read if there are any of this species in Nova Scotia, as I have a Nephew there who is always beachcombing for me and going on other adventures for me there, my recent request to him was Joggins Fossil Cliffs and Rocky shore lines for Periwinkle shells and land snail hunts. So let me know if Nova Scotia was on place to find these Arianta arbustorum and I will ask him to check it out. vallery

Hi snailbaby , Thanks for the info. I will definitely look for that book. I have been given two great books. One from my Cousin and one from my Brother. 1. Snail by Peter Williams published 2009 2. Snails by Dorothy Childs Hogner Published 1958 I have the tenth addition. They are both really great, lots of information, illustrations and photos. I'd recommend these two books as well as yours. vallery If anyone else has some great snail books let us know the name of the books and who the author is, the publishing date helps as well to locate the book

Hi everyone , It took some time but I have managed to adjust a tank that works as a communal tank. I have Cepaea nemoralis, Cepaea Hortensis (Canadian and English), Heath snails, and Discus rotundatus cohabitating in the one terrarium plus I hatch baby Pleurodonte isabella in there as well (then put the baby P. Isabella into the adult P.isabella terrarium tank) as well I am having great success with babies of the other species hatching and surviving in this tank. I tried so many things before trying to keep babies alive but nothing worked before this. If anyone is interested in trying this let me know and I will post how the tank is set up. vallery

I like having potted plants (plastic pots so they don't fall and chip their shells) because they love to climb on them and sleep under the leaves (so a lot of their poop ends up on the plants instead of the tanks) so then it is easy to take out the plants and wash the poop off of them then put them back in after. They also seem to prefer to lay their eggs in the pots.
