That does look a lot like a dead snail I'm afraid. The retraction thing seems to be something that happens but from what I've seen researching it- it's happened to some of my GALS- nobody knows for sure what causes it or how to prevent it.

In my experience they love the leaves but don't seem to want the flowers. I don't think they'd do them any harm they just don't like them

Where are you located? I have a bunch of babies myself but I want to get some variety into my tank so I could at least take one.

I know someone who feeds their GALS gammarus and apparently they love them. I've had similar success with dried daphnia, which are a bit smaller and more bitesized for them.

I have one of these guys living with my fulicas. He's quite fond of butternut squash as well but he seems to eat everything they do, including green beans as an apparent favourite. I shall try some green beans, still in the pod or what? What size did your snail grow to? From what I have read.... Achatina reticulata are the second largest GALS out them all with Achatina achatina bein the largest or am I completely wrong? I was under the impression that margies and the other archacatina were bigger but I could be wrong. Breakdown isn't fully grown yet I don't think but they're about 10cm long on the shell at the moment. As for the beans, they only seem to eat the outside and leave the beans themselves.

I love the little racing stripes on their heads, where are these native to?

Snails4you has a lot of different types. They seem to specialize in giant snails though. I've never bought from there, so I don't know if it's reliable, but it seems to be. They have some helix pomatia at the moment, and I've always found them pretty reliable, but they do mostly do giant snails. Their stock seems to change fairly regularly but I doubt they'd do cepea because they're so dang common in the wild. We get about four or five different colour morphs where I am, including the lovely golden and peachy coloured ones

Most of the others seem fine but my jadtzi seems very lethargic and unwilling to eat. I'm worried there's some kind of infection in the tank that's affecting the genetically weaker (likely?) Albinos. Gonna keep them separate and hope for the best

The stench is definitely the biggest giveaway, oh boy. It smells like rotting fish, is the best way I can describe it

I'd avoid using any kinds of soap in your tank, especially on something absorbent like wood. A bit of slime shouldn't do them any harm.

I'm not sure what happened but my gorgeous rodatzi was found dead in the tank this evening. The others snails seem fine at least. He'd been a little lethargic recently but was moving around the day before yesterday and seemed to be improving. Deeply upset, since I've only had him since April. Poor little noot.

Back when I was doing teacher training I brought my snails in to show the kids as part of a lesson on adaptation/variation. It went down better with some of the kids than others.

Get them another terrarium or a big plastic storage box if you want more space. Cardboard won't hold up because a) it'll be wet and b) I have a feeling they'd eat it.

Could just be they need some time to get used to it. I baked my substrate to clean it and now mine won't come down- same substrate, just sterilised. Hoping they'll get used to it!

I guess they're like a lot of animals that just explore stuff with their mouth. My GALS do this quite a lot and even with those big guys it's just tickly and kind of cute.

Usually I just scoop out any obvious poops that are on the surface or on the tank walls, and that seems to keep them happy. You only really need to replace the soil if you start getting flies or other bugs in the tank.

Bonus video from the night they were born. The narrator is my boyfriend who, fortunately, loves the little lads as much as I do.

As longs as they're native to where you live then it's totally fine to let them go. I'm sure you've done a great job taking care of them but if you feel it's not for you then it's probably better to set them free rather than have them end up neglected.

My Rodatzi seems to have a similar issue but it doesn't seem to bother them. Giving them gentle baths seems to help their shells improve, or at least to look better.

Working the little dude into some jewellery is a lovely idea. I'm sorry to hear they passed but I'm sure you'll do a great job with any snails you get in future.
