Ooh, I will have to try that tea, too... There's a crazy amount of nematodes in my one tank at the moment. It seems whenever you keep animals that like warm, moist conditions, it's a constant battle against pests and mold.

I recently got a digital microscope (although, it's more like a macro-scope lol), and was able to take a pretty cool video of one of my Zachrysia porsovia snails coming out of it's shell. It captures the texture of the snail's foot, as well as it's pneumostome opening very clearly. Enjoy! youtu.be/8wEdnt8EcSw

I know that snails can overdose on calcium and other nutrients, but I'm not sure about overeating. Since he isn't fully mature, I would think eating a lot to grow would be fine... when they were still growing, my Z. porsovia babies would go through two or three romaine lettuce leaves per day, in addition to feasting on cuttlebone. I did read about some GALS that ate too much pasta and became bloated, later dying, but If I remember correctly, that was from too much starch, so it shouldn't happen with lettuce.

You could probably grind up some cuttlebone into a powder, and mix it in or sprinkle it on top of his food

The snail in my profile picture, named Bismuth, is probably one of the prettiest snails I have, in my opinion. I believe that they are a queen crater snail, or Appalachina chilhoweensis, but I'm not positive about that

To my knowledge, a snail develops a lip when they are fully grown/mature, so he probably has been a juvenile

I have been quite surprised and amazed by how quickly some of my snails have developed shell lips... Like HelixPomatia said, Mesodons do get lips, like my own Mesodon thyroidus, Ember. So, likely he is a mesodon thyroidus, or some sort of Mesodon.

Ramshorn snails and nerite snails are both easy to care for species and do well in a smaller setup, as long as it's not overcrowded, a few snails in a five to ten gallon should be happy. Ramshorn snails come in a lot of color morphs, and nerite snails are very vibrant as well. Of course, there's always the basic pond snails that are quite common, and have a habit of ending up in aquariums accidentally. With a smaller setup, you'd probably have to be vigilant about egg removal/population control. I have no idea about the legality of aquatic snails in Canada, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to help

For my adult snails and slugs, I have a ten gallon three large Tupperware containers. The babies are sorted by species and kept in plastic containers that reflect their size, so they're easy to keep track of. I hope to upgrade the ten gallon to a twenty, and the containers to ten gallon tanks, and sort the snails by species, as well as get many, many more snails haha!

Just thought I'd share some snail pictures! My zachrysia porsovias, Europa (the white-shelled one)+ babies: imgur.com/a/oILhTEuropa: http://instagram.com/p/BApZa_9wMQ- I'm not sure why Europa has a white shell, she's had it since I found her. It doesn't seem to effect her, and it's actually quite pretty. In some of the pictures, you can see the damage done to their shells from a mite infestation I had. They're slowly healing... My two queen crater snails, Bismuth (brown hued) + Andromeda (Lighter one) imgur.com/a/oV9MvBismuth: http://instagram.com/p/-hdQE_QMTn Bismuth is probably, in my opinion, one of the prettiest snails I currently have. Andromeda randomly appeared in the tank one day, before I got Bismuth. I suspect their egg got brought in on some moss. My flamed tiger snail, very un-creatively named Tiger (in my defense, it was before I knew what it's species was called xD) imgur.com/a/D8RuOSpends most of it's time buried, and only comes out at night, making it hard to get pictures of. My asian tramp snails, Centauri (stripe) Mariner (no stripe) and Karl (squishing his face between the glass and carrot) imgur.com/a/rWSxuhttp://instagram.com/p/-hbburwMf9 Sadly, Centauri's sibling, Proxima, died fairly recently from unknown causes... they were about 3.5 years old, as is Centauri. My mesodon thyroidus, Ember, who will be seven years old this upcoming summer. imgur.com/a/zFm8yhttp://instagram.com/p/-hdia-wMUV Two unidentified snails, Orion and Jupiter: Orion: http://instagram.com/p/-hcptcQMSW Jupiter: http://instagram.com/p/-hb2mSwMQs Two unnamed snails, I have found their species before, but I can't remember what it was... tri-something, maybe? triposphis or something like that... http://instagram.com/p/-hbotnwMQV Some misc wild snails I have found, including southern flat coils, a rosy wolf, and marsh periwinkles: http://instagram.com/p/9wSIE5QMZ5 http://instagram.com/p/9t0PlUwMYl http://instagram.com/p/9o0oDsQMXD Sorry about all of the links, most of the photos I was able to upload in albums to Imgur, but some didn't properly transfer from my phone to laptop, so I had to use the pictures I posted to Instagram some weeks ago. But eau, those are my snails! I hope to get some cepaea nemormalis/hortensis, cornu asperum, pacific sideband, some native Floridia species, more meson species, ambersnails, and basically any other snails I happen to run in to. This spring, I will be driving from where I'm at, in Ohio, to California, so, I hope to find many cool snails along the way! OH, I almost forgot, some pictures of all the snails (and slugs) together after I gave them a bath. (from when I was sterilizing everything in the tank due to a mite issue) imgur.com/a/KCj04

A warm bath in distilled water usually works for me... Some snail species are also more nocturnal than others. Sometimes I don 't see one of my snails move or come to the surface for a few days, but they're always fine, so maybe just give him some time...

Yeah, they're really interesting little snails!
I'll definitely try solids first, thanks for the tip! Very excited for the summer when I can go and collect some.
That sprayer is ingenious, thank you!

Hello,
I was curious if anyone here keeps or knows about the keeping of marsh periwinkle snails. There are loads of them where I vacation in South Carolina, and I have been quite tempted to bring some home, but I didn't want to try and care for them without a good bit of information first. I have researched their lifecycle and feeding habits, and I have a few ideas on how I'd look after them (tank setup, food, ect) but I wanted to see if anyone on here knows about them, since I haven't found any information on the internet so far that tells how to keep them as pets.
My current idea for a setup is to have a tall tank, with a sandy bottom and a thin layer of saltwater. I would then stick fake aquarium grass in the sand so it sticks up, mimicking the marsh grass the snails are used to. As for food, since they rasp algae off marsh grasses, I though it might work to dissolve algae wafers in water and smear that on the fake plants.
On a slightly different note, what sort of spray bottles do you use? I have tried many, but none have worked that well, especially when it comes to pointing them downwards.
Thanks!
(Wasn't exactly sure where to put this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place)
